This Primary Maths Subject Leader Network group will focus on supporting leads to effectively implement and sustain improvements to the whole school mathematics curriculum. Ranging from looking at EYFS through to year 6, in these sessions we will look at the role of the subject leader and how to best strategically plan for and deliver continuous improvement and innovation.

11th November – 13:00 – 15:00

Location: St Bernard’s

In this session we will look at the new EEF Implementation Guidance released last academic year and unpick what key messages there are that relate to how best to lead mathematics. We will also spend time unpicking the Y6 SAT tests from last year and discuss what implications these may have for our teaching across school. Finally, we will also look at maths curriculum evaluation and begin to consider how the best available research and national guidance can support us in evaluating our curriculum offer.

10th February 2025 – 13:00 – 15:00

Location: Maritime Hub, Birkenhead

In this session, we will revisit the Implementation Guidance and reflect on the way in which we are using this in our roles so far. We will also spend time sharing our evaluation of mathematics curriculum offers in each of our schools, sharing effective practice and unpicking problems that we are finding. There will also be a chance for maths leads to bring questions or problems they are facing that can be collaboratively discussed.

9th June 2025 – 13:00 – 15:00

Location: St Bernard’s

This content of this session will be informed by the previous sessions and will focus on practical actions that can be taken by maths leads to help drive improvements.

Andy leads the Cheshire and Wirral Maths Hub, and is the strategic leader of maths across the Holy Family Multi-academy Trust. He specialises in closing the gap between research and practice, and has significant experience helping teachers understand what evidence-informed teaching looks like. With a background in early years maths, Andy now works with primary and secondary school teachers and leads several large-scale school development projects. His research specialism is in classroom-based, ‘close to practice’ sociological study, where he focuses on unpacking the nuances within education research and applying them to the classroom. He has published several papers based on his research and continues to investigate teachers’ use of materials in the maths classroom.
